Crown Regency Hotel in V. Rama (formerly Metropolis Court Hotel)

I don't want to sound offensive, but this was the worst hotel that I have stayed so far. I'm not really a persnickety person and I'm not too much into a flashy accommodation. Just a CLEAN room with working facilities, comfy bed and pillows are just fine with me.

Though the location of Crown Regency Hotel in V. Rama (formerly Metropolis Court Hotel) is good and the room is wide, the hotel is a bit old and it really needs MAINTENANCE and GENERAL CLEANING.

(nice Lobby but small )
(Standard Room)
(Toilet and Bath)

The real nuisance was we had to change our rooms many times. First, the air-condition was super dusty with no handles and the watercloset was overflowing. They sent us a plumber but it was to no avail. Second, the hot and cold shower kept malfunctioning. And for the third time, we moved again to another similar room. I thought we were going to be fine until I noticed the shower room had a big hole in the ceiling. Here we go again, I thought. Plus all the windows are so high that you had to use a chair to take a peek. Even though we really wanted to check-out, it was already midnight. We had no choice but to stay there. So, we just decided to bear with it.

The next day we left the hotel after we had our decent breakfast and as soon as we paid the necessary bill.

(2 small slices of Pineapple - dessert)
All the inconvenience we had to go through was really a HASSLE stay.

THE LEGEND VILLAS

We celebrated my elder sister birthday at The Legend Villas in Mandaluyong. The Legend Villas is 100% Filipino owned hotel and has a Vigan-inspired architecture and design. The villa itself is comfortably finished in a traditional finely polished wood furnishings, capiz windows, Venetian mirrors, to name a few. The place is particularly suited for family holidays and it has also become an oasis for businessmen and company executives who need a moment of relaxation and leisure. Set in the midst of a bustling metropolis but somewhat secluded location, the villa accommodations provide privacy where you can unwind and spend your weekend getaways.

(Hotel's corridor)

There are guest rooms, that cater to small and medium-sized groups of people ranging from Superior / Premier, Family Room, Villa Suite (De Luxe and Premier), and the Team Suites. We chose the Team Suites ($ 120.00) since we were too many. The fully airconditioned 2-storey unit comes with six (6) single beds with individual closets, a sofa bed, kitchenette, living and dining area, electric pot, Cable Television on ground and upper floor, two (2) telephone units, mini bar, two (2) working tables, two (2) toilets and bath. The room can be arranged to lend ease and comfort to a group of six or more.

(Team Suite)

We had our dinner at Lola Maria Coffee Shop.

The hotel's coffee shop is especially appealing where we didn't mind spending time, while savoring an array of a la carte offerrings... from festive to regional Filipino home cooked style. I'm sure a lot of us left the restaurant with full bellies and memories of Platter-Inihaw (P1,399.00), Ubod Rolls (P135.00), Open Food (P4,800.00), Pancit Tostado (P188.00), Chopsuey (P165.00), Steamed Rice (30.00) and Brewed Coffee (P68.00). We spent a total of P9, 317.00, but we only paid P6,909.53 for 23 guests. We got a 30% discount on food. Thanks to my brother's membership card.

The Open Foods that we ordered - carbonara, grilled fish (I love this!), tinolang isda, vegetable salads and 2 kinds of desserts.

This place has a charming ambiance and the excellent service was friendly and very efficient. They are open from 6:00 am to 10:00 am for Breakfast Buffet. They serve a la carte menu for lunch and dinner and buffet lunches on Wednesdays and Fridays at 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. They are open from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm. 24-hour room service is also available.

NEW WORLD MAYFAIR HOTEL (ANNEX)

After a busy and hectic day of tour, we arrived at the "Five-Star" New World Mayfair Hotel, one of the largest hotel complexes in Shanghai, comprising 605 "Five-Star" rooms (main building) and 255 "Four Star" rooms (annex) .

Our group stayed at the Annex, which is a four-star hotel conveniently located near shopping malls and restaurants, within easy access of the underground subway and just a few blocks from my favorite Carrefour Hypermarket.

The main lobby of the hotel.

The annex lobby

As soon as we checked-in, I was quite disappointed with the size of the room as there wasn't much space. It was pretty small compared to Tiantan Hotel in Beijing where we stayed. The room is a little basic for a 4-star rated hotel. However, it's a nice place and equipped with all the comforts.

Our room has broadband internet access, TV with satellite channels, IDD, electric safety deposit box, tea and coffee set, hair dryer, clock radio and electric door lock.

The hotel hallways

The recreational facilities features a gym, outdoor swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam, and massage service.

This hotel also has wheelchair accessible, morning call, city transfers, car rental, salon, currency exchange, airport pick-up and drop-off.

On our first day, we had our fabulous buffet breakfast at the ballroom found in the main building.

But the remaining days of our stay, we had our daily complimentary buffet breakfast in one of their multifuntion rooms.

An array of breakfast dishes were prepared and set up outside the room.

Inside the function room where we had our light leisurely breakfast.

We sampled a variety of food with a fresh roasted coffee and fresh brewed tea of our choice.

This bright, cheery room has glass windows overlooking Zhong Shan Street.

CORREGIDOR HOTEL

After the half-day tour, we were brought to the Corregidor Hotel for a buffet lunch. We did get to sample all the dishes that were laid out on a simple table setting. Decent food but nothing spectacular. But the dining area was definitely a homely and welcoming atmosphere.

With us, our veteran Corregidor tour guide Mr. Alonzo, who is articulate, very pleasant and knowledgeable to share about the history and sights. It is clear to all of us that he really likes what he does.

After a fulfilling lunch, we then completed the rest of the tour. In the mid-afternoon, the day-trippers were brought back straight to the ferryboat for their return trip to Manila that departs from Corregidor at 2:30 pm. Then us overnighters were brought to the hotel to check in and spend the rest of the days at our own leisure.

Corregidor Hotel:
The Corregidor hotel offers accommodations with private facilities for those who wish to prolong their journey back into history.

There are 31 fully air-conditioned rooms with hot and cold showers, 30 standard rooms (single, twin or triple occupancy) and 1 suite. The hotel has recreation center, a clubhouse and outdoor basketball and tennis courts.

Genting Highland

Genting Highland Part I:

After our city tour we proceeded to Genting Highlands, the most visited hill resort, theme park, theatre and numerous recreational and amusement facilities in the country. Just about an hour away by car from Kuala Lumpur.

The resort is more than 35 years old, although the area is constantly being developed and its attractions ever increasing. Genting Highlands is a good place to get away for cool air, a very green setting and a chance to have fun with family and friends.

The place is also home to the largest casino in the region, and this is the only place where gamblers can congregate in the country. Malaysian Muslims are not allowed to enter.

We enjoyed an easy hassle-free ride on the Genting Skyway up to Genting - City of Entertainment for a 20-minute ride. Moving at a maximum speed of 21.6 km. per hour. It was a relaxing and fun experience that sharpens our senses.

We had a fantastic view of the breathtaking scenery and animatronics (scupltured animals) along the way.

The fogs was so thick that we had a 50-50 visibility near the Genting Highland cable car station. The cool mountain air and the scenic surroundings... the best!

We arrived at First World Hotel, the current largest hotel in the world with a total of 6, 118 rooms. This hotel is the latest addition to five other hotels in Genting. This is also the first hotel in Malaysia to introduce computerised queue system to expedite check-ins.

The miniature size of Genting Highland displayed in the main lobby.

Once we entered the main lobby, I was amazed by the tastefully decorated surroundings especially the rainforest theme. (my photos don't really do justice to the elegant place)

The huge hotel lobby was chock-full and the long check-in counter was packed solid with people queuing. I'm so glad, our tour guide arranged everything for our one night stay in the hotel.

The hotel room is extremely small. And keep in mind the bathroom door is made of semi-translucent glass.

After we checked in and put our luggage in our room, our tour guide brought us to a restaurant for a quick lunch.

Allson-Genesis Hotel

The next stop was Allson-Genesis Hotel. We arrived at the hotel around 10:30 pm.

After we checked-in, we went out and looked for a restaurant. It was already late, so we decided to have our dinner at the hash house beside the hotel. And we tried this "Hookien Fried Mee", an egg noodles fried in dark soy sauce with veggies and lots of other stuff like squid, sausages etc. It tasted fine but it was a little too oily for my liking.

So, after we finished eating, we looked again for another restaurant and guess what? We ended up eating at KFC. :)

Aside from 1 night at First World Hotel in Genting Highlands, we spent 4 nights at Allson-Genesis, the business boutique city hotel located in the heart of Golden Triangle in Bukit Bintang area. It has a quite good location, near the shopping centers, cafes, clubs and entertainment hubs. Hawker stalls are just at the back of the hotel, and near LRT station which is just five minutes by walk.

All rooms feature central air-conditioning, color TV with international satellite channels and in-house video, IDD, teleports for internet access, Internet broadband, electronic in-room safe, mini fridge and complimentary coffee and tea-making facilities.

The hotel buffet breakfast was laid out nicely, but the food was only so-so. And to top it all, our last night stay in the hotel was a headache. We were not able to sleep until midnight due to noise from next room. Darn, these people are so 'ignoramus' (ignorant). No proper etiquette. tsk...tsk... After knocking twice and getting no reply, we decided to call the hotel security just to get their attention.

Bangkok: Introduction & Getting There

September 2002

BANGKOK is the capital and largest city of Thailand. It is considered as one of the worlds 22 megacities. Today it has one of the fastest rates of construction of high rise buildings. Currently it is the most densely populated in Southeast Asia. Moreover, it is one of the world's most popular tourist destinations and the vibrant cities with dazzling temples, exotic food, noisy markets, teak palaces, bars, etc...

It is said that there's really no bad time to visit Thailand's capital, rain and extreme heat are less frequent between November and February. April is only recommended to those with portable air conditioners, while October brings the heaviest rains - these are probably the best times to be out of Thailand. The tourists flock to Bangkok in December and August, while the least crowded months tend to be May, June and September.

GETTING THERE:
This was my first time to travel "out of the country". My hubby and I took the Philippine Airline package and it was pretty neat. Package inclusions a free daily buffet breakfast, private transfers to and from the airport and a half-day city tour. We stayed there for 4 days / 3 nights. We went there on September of 2002. Bangkok was stiflingly hot!

A funny thing happened at the airport, we were mistaken for Singaporeans by a Filipino couple. We just laughed and told them that we're also Filipinos.

We picked some of the latest edition of the maps that we saw at the airport. We had exchanged our US dollars at their Foreign Currency Exchange facility.

HOTEL:
We stayed at First House Hotel. This is just a three star hotel but it offers good value standard accommodation.

The hotel is well-situated in Pratunam area.

A place well-known for its street markets, bazaar and local vendors. It is also near the World Trade Center, now renamed Central World Plaza. The largest shopping mall and office complex in Bangkok.

One thing, I don't like the place, it's noisy and crowded. But other than that, the place is fine. The buffet breakfast was also good.

GETTING AROUND:
Bangkok has an extensive bus service with routes serving every part of the city.

There are both air-conditioned blue buses and non air-conditioned red and green vehicles, which provide an extreme cheap way of getting around town.

One of the advanced type of urban railway is the Bangkok Transit System (BTS), an elevated heavy rail system.

Bangkok metered Taxis are available.

Make sure the driver turns on the meter, especially if you're starting from the airport. Always have an exact amount, as taxi drivers don't often give change. Some drivers often charge tourists way over the odds for a journey that would cost only a few baht. Passengers must pay tolls in the case of using an expressway. Please take note that most of the drivers don't speak / understand English.

They also have Motorcycle taxi. This is only for the adventurous one but extremely popular among Bangkokians because of the traffic congestion. Fares must be bargained in advance.

They have river taxis but these are just cross-river ferries.

And the most popular is Tuk-Tuk.

It's a three wheeled open- air vehicles taking two passengers (three or four at a squeeze). Best for shorter trips. Settle the fare before proceeding. And beware, most of these motorcycles are tourist traps especially along the temples and other tourist areas. Including the people offering an unsolicited advice and help. Though they may give legitimate locations and places, these people actually want to lead you to a jewelry shop or any other shops for you to buy stuffs, which in turn give them commissions from those shops.

Our Tuk-tuk tourist trap experience...
First ride, the driver brought us first to a jewelry shop before proceeding to our own destination. We ended up buying two big sterling silver rings, which cost us P3,500. The rings are ok, though.

Second ride, the driver brought us to an Indian shop without informing or asking us. The confusing part was... we thought that was the place we wanted to go. Darn! Anyway, the shop was selling garments like silk and other stuff from India. The clothes are expensive. I think it was triple than the original price. And guess what... the driver was a little bit irritated when we told him we didn't buy anything... hahaha...

Third ride, We told the driver where we wanted to go and he nodded. As we were traveling along the street... the driver told us that he'll drop us first to a shop. I was thinking, "Oh no, here we go again! tsk! tsk! Patience... patience..."

We told him in a nice way with smiling faces, "Sorry but not now. We are not interested and we are in a hurry." But the driver insisted many times and so we just kept on repeating what we said. And suddenly he continued ignoring us until we really got pissed off. What we did was... we shouted at him at the top of our lungs, "STOP! STOOOOOOP!!!" (I think our small eyes had popped out).

When he stopped, we left immediately and we looked for another tuk-tuk. I think we did a little hullabaloo there. Some of these drivers are so annoying!!!
